Educational & Developmental Psychology

Postgraduate Research Award

The Lewis & Lewis Award has been established to foster applied research within the field of Educational and Developmental Psychology. The award recognises outstanding potential in student research. The award is provided to assist a student through the final phase of their academic study and in the production and dissemination of the high quality, applied research component of that study.

The Lewis & Lewis Educational & Developmental Psychology Postgraduate Research Award will be $5000.00. The award will be provided in three instalments to the winner:

      1. on winning the award
      2. after the examination of the thesis
      3. after the dissemination of the findings

The third instalment will be paid at a presentation organised by Lewis & Lewis when a report will be made of the findings of the research.

Both Mark and Bronwyn Lewis are members of the APS College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists. The APS College of Educational and Developmental Psychology acknowledges the generous contribution of Mark and Bronwyn Lewis to the development of Educational Psychology by offering this award.

Nominee eligibility criteria

Students may nominate themselves or be nominated by their academic supervisor. Nominees must be:

  • An Australian citizen or have permanent residency status in Australia
  • A financial student member of the APS and a student member of the College of Educational and Developmental Psychology
  • A postgraduate student enrolled in an APAC accredited postgraduate degree in Educational and Developmental Psychology (Master, DPsych, Masters/PhD), or enrolled for a PhD with a topic that meets the criteria

Nominee process

Students will:

  • Have the a proposal agreed to and signed by their academic research supervisor
  • Provide a 1,000 word proposal of the research

The research proposal must indicate how the research will be:

  • immediately applicable to practice
  • disseminated after completion

Judging Criteria

All nominees must meet the eligibility criteria to proceed to the judging panel.
Please address specific judging criteria for the Award in the nomination submission.
Awards will be conferred only if there is a candidate considered to be of sufficient merit.


Indicative Criteria for the Lewis & Lewis Educational & Developmental Psychology Postgraduate Research Award:

  • A proposal anticipating research of an exceptional quality
  • Relevance of the research to Educational and Developmental Psychology
  • Immediate applicability of the research to professional practice
  • Quality of the anticipated dissemination process eg:
    • Possible publications in a leading applied national journal
    • Potential training program/s delivered
    • Potential production of professional activities such as presentations and conference

One week after the closing of nominations a Committee, including CEDP committee members who have no conflict of interest with the applicants, will adjudicate the one winner of the Award. 

Winner Announced

 

Lewis & Lewis would like to congratulate this year's winner, Meredith O'Connor from the University of Melbourne. Meredith's study examines the longitudinal antecedents (including educational) of positive functioning during the transition to adulthood, and how positive indicators of wellbeing relate to psychopathology.
