1.       How much will the assessment cost?

2.       Do both parents need to be there?

We strongly recommend that both parents attend the observation and feedback sessions.  Many parents find that they feel more supported when their spouse is present and they also appreciate having the opportunity of discussing the issues together.

3.       Is this confidential?

In all cases we do not divulge the results to anyone other than the referrer unless we have parental permission. 

4.       What if there is more than one diagnosis?

At the time of the feedback session, the Psychologist will explain their findings and impressions and discuss whether there may be co-morbid (co-occurring) conditions. For example, children with language disorder may also experience signs of anxiety or problems with attention. Children with Asperger Syndrome typically experience difficulties with fine motor skills.

5.       What if it isn’t Autism Spectrum Disorder?

The Psychologist will provide a diagnostic opinion about whether they believe the child has a Pervasive Developmental Disorder.  If the Psychologist does not believe the presenting difficulties are attributable to an Autism Spectrum Disorder, she may recommend futher assessments to make a differential diagnosis. Additional testing will incur a further cost and cannot be included under the Autism Assessment rebates.  Families can decide whether they would like to continue with additional investigations.

6.       Can I get another opinion?

All Health Professionals make every attempt to give the most professional advice given the available information.  You are entitled to receive a second opinion however this is unlikely to be covered under the Medicare Rebates unless you have not used your whole four sessions.

7.       What does Medicare cover?

While a referral is not mandatory, Medicare Rebates that are available for a number of services and can only be accessed if a referral from a Medical Practitioner is received.  In some cases, a General Practitioner may make the referral while in other cases, a referral from a Paediatrician will be required. 

8. Can I use private health insurance?

Rebates are available for some clients who have Extras Cover with their Private Health Insurance Company.  Rebate amounts will vary from Company to Company.

10. Who receives a copy of the report?

A copy of the report goes to the parent and the referrer.

11.  What happens after the assessment?

The Psychologist’s findings are reviewed by the referring Paediatrician. If the child is eligible for Medicare Treatment Rebates, the Paediatrician will trigger a referral for services to a provider of the parent’s choice.   Parents are welcome to book in for treatment sessions at the Lewis and Lewis Clinic, however at this stage we have a waiting list
