What is psychology and how does it help with human development?
Psychology studies the human mind and how it influences human behavior. It also examines human activity, and attempts to provide the explanations behind what we do.
Psychology takes its name from the Greek psyche for the mind and logos for knowledge or thought.
Many people associate the birth of psychology with the Austrian physician, Sigmund Freud however Wilhelm Wundt was largely behind the development of experimental psychology in Leipzig in 1879.
Wundt’s initial work relied on a primitive analysis of feelings. Since then, psychology has gone on to embrace many more fields of human thought and behavior.
The major planks in psychology today consist of:
- Clinical psychology —identifying, treating and relieving symptoms of psychologically or socially induced distress
- Cognitive psychology—deals with thought and information processing, and has applications in linguistic and learning challenges

- Biological psychology—largely based on physical experimentation and neuroscience
- Comparative psychology— is a branch of psychology in which emphasis is placed on cross-species comparisons including human to animal comparisons.
- Forensic psychology—a specialist field that interprets behavior in legal or criminal circumstances.
